Andrews cop arrested on state charges

A former Andrews police officer was arrested June 28 on an indictment in connection with a 2011 drug roundup.

Gerardo Aranda, 27, was arrested after being indicted on misuse of official information, a third-degree felony, in the 109th District Court in Andrews.

Aranda was an officer with the Andrews Police Department and was fired in July 2011 after being arrested in a major drug investigation, according to a news release by the APD.

The investigation, headed up by Andrews police, the FBI and Department of Public Safety Narcotics Unit, also resulted in the arrest of more than 20 individuals, including Cody Lyn Timmons, who was sentenced to 151 months in federal prison and eight years supervised release on drug and money laundering charges.

Neither Andrews County District Attorney Tim Mason nor Police Chief Bud Jones returned calls for comment Tuesday.

Two Andrews County Sheriff’s Office employees refused to release any information about Aranda’s release from jail, saying such information could only be released by the sheriff. Neither identified themselves, although one agreed that the public information was public at all times.
