Sandy OPD officer charged with drunk driving

Officer Jennifer Folstein, 37, was charged with speeding and driving drunk in Brevard County, records show.

A rookie Orlando police officer was arrested over the weekend in Brevard County on a charge of driving drunk, records show.

Officer Jennifer Lynn Folstein, 37, of Palm Bay was arrested early Sunday in Satellite Beach and was cited for driving about 10 miles over the speed limit.

Folstein was southbound on State Road A1A, also known as Atlantic Avenue, about 1 a.m. when other drivers noticed her vehicle was swerving in the travel lanes, a report said.

One witness notified a nearby Satellite Beach officer, who began following Folstein.

The affidavit said Folstein was having trouble driving in a straight line, crossed the inner and outer lanes a few times and, at one point, drove too close to another vehicle.

When the officer pulled Folstein over, she was covered in sand, saying she had come from Cocoa Beach where she had had a "couple of drinks" and a beer.

The officer said Folstein had glassy eyes, slurred her speech and smelled like alcohol, an arrest affidavit said.

She performed poorly during the field sobriety tests but refused to take a breath test, a report states.

Folstein was booked into the Brevard County Jail. She was released on bail several hours later.

Folstein, a patrol officer, was hired in January. She is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, an Orlando police spokesman said.
