HPD officer charged with sexual assault

A Houston police officer was indicted and arrested Thursday for a rape that allegedly took place last month.

Adan Jimenez Carranza, 32, is accused of a June 18 aggravated sexual assault, according to court records.

Carranza was suspended with pay June 21 because of a pending internal affairs investigation, Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.

Smith said Carranza was assigned to the Westside patrol division and started with HPD in September 2009.

Few details about the allegations were released Thursday, and it was unclear whether the alleged assault took place while Carranza was on duty.

Sally Ring, an attorney representing Carranza through the Houston Police Officer's Union, said the officer was indicted by a Harris County grand jury Thursday, but the details of the allegations had not been made available to her.

She noted that police officers, like anyone else, are innocent until proven guilty.

"Just because they are police officers doesn't mean they are held to any higher legal standard," Ring said.
