Drunken incident may end the career of a Newcastle police officer.

Newcastle Local court has heard a young off-duty police officer may have ruined his career over a drunken incident at a Newcastle hotel where he took a swipe at a security guard.

23 year old Probationary Constable Shaun Bevan pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an incident at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Merewether, in February this year.

The court heard Bevan was highly intoxicated when security guards first escorted him from the hotel.

The off-duty officer then made other attempts to re-enter the pub and flipped open his wallet to reveal his NSW police badge.

When one of the hotel bouncers attempted to restrain Bevan, he threw a punch but it did not connect.

The court heard in recent weeks the probationary constable has been suspended without pay and his police career may be over.

He was placed on a good behaviour bond for nine months and fined $400.
