Police have arrested one of their own who is
accused of withholding recovered stolen property in exchange for sex from the
victim.
A woman reported the theft of personal property in June. The property was found earlier this month when a Kern County deputy stopped a stolen vehicle.
Bakersfield Officer Patrick Lefler was dispatched to assist the deputy and take control of the woman's stolen property.
Ten days later, the police department launched a criminal investigation into Lefler's alleged actions. The officer was accused of holding the woman's stolen items ransom for sexual favors. Lefler allegedly sent the victim text messages, telling her he'd hand over her property if she met him for sex, the police department said Thursday.
Lefler booked the woman's stolen property into the police department Monday, more than a week after it was recovered. He was arrested Wednesday and placed on paid administrative leave.
The victim's stolen driver's license was not found after a search of Lefler's home and patrol car.
Lefler has been with the department since August 2009.
