An
Austin police officer received a one-day suspension after striking a woman with
his car near the state Capitol in May, police officials said. Police
spokeswoman Veneza Aguinaga said that about 6:40 p.m. on May 16, an officer was
driving a suspect to the Travis County Jail when he stopped at a red light at
Seventh Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. After stopping, the officer turned
right but did not see a female pedestrian and struck her, Aguinaga said. The
woman was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with injuries that
were not life-threatening, Aguinaga said. The suspect in the car complained of
pain and also was taken to the hospital, although he did not have any visible
injuries, Aguinaga said. The officer, Carlos Mayfield, received a one-day
suspension, which is a common discipline for police involved in traffic
mishaps.
