Ex- El Paso cop indicted in pay scandal

A state district court grand jury indicted a former El Paso cop on charges of tampering with government documents in a grant-funded pay scandal.

The indictment of David Michael Jimenez, 37, brings the total to 17 cops, many of whom have either resigned or retired, since an investigation into discrepancies linked to state traffic enforcement grants began.

Jimenez was arrested on Tuesday and later released after posting a $450 bond. Records show he left the department in October.

The investigation began last summer after an audit into the state grant.

Officials said the Texas Department of Transportation requested that police Internal Affairs conduct an inquiry after 20 officers were "red-flagged" for potential violations.

The investigation then spread to other officers.

More indictments are expected.
