Clermont officers fired over off-duty, high-speed chase prank

Two Clermont police officers have been fired following a prank in which they led a fellow officer on a high-speed chase back in March.

Officer Marc Thompson and Sgt. Mark Edwards were fired from their positions last week. A third officer who was in the car with them was suspended for one day without pay.

Officer Christina Fowler spotted a speeding car on U.S. Highway 26 late in the night on March 5, but when she attempted to pull the car over, the driver fled, reaching speeds up to 90 mph.

Fowler put her lights on and followed the vehicle, which eventually came to a stop in the Clermont Landing shopping center.

Once stopped, the driver opened the door and got out, laughing hysterically as Fowler drew her weapon. That’s when Fowler said she recognized the man as Thompson.

Following an investigation, Thompson and Edwards were fired from their positions on Thursday.
