CRANSTON,
R.I. --
With guns drawn, Cranston
police swarmed a home in a quiet neighborhood in the Garden City section last
week. And it was a fellow police officer on the other end of the stand-off. Now
that officer is facing charges himself.
The Westerly Sun and
Cranston Patch reported that Hopkinton police Sgt John Patton was the one
inside the home and that he's now facing several charges in connection with the
disturbance.
Neighbors told NBC 10
they knew that the out-of-town police officer was living in the home with his
sister.
"What I didn't know
is he had all the furniture against the doors. I don't know what he thought.
But something was wrong with him mentally,” said neighbor Eleanor Campellone.
Campellone was told by police to stay inside her home while all this was
unfolding last week.
"I just figured
something was wrong with him and they'd have to deal with him whether he was a
police officer or a hobo, they had to deal with him,” said Campellone.
No one answered at the
home Wednesday. Las week people there did not want to comment after the
stand-off ended.
The Westerly Sun reports
Patton was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Court records show Patton
is now being charged with carrying a weapon while under the influence, falsely
reporting a crime, and disorderly conduct.
He's due in court in
September.
Cranston police have not
returned calls from NBC 10.
The town manager in
Hopkinton said he can't comment on the situation or the officer's job status
because of the police officers’ Bill of Rights.
Five years ago, Patton
won an award as the town's Policeman of the Year.
