Boulder cop Christian McCracken charged with attempted murder in stalking case

Boulder police Officer Christian McCracken was formally charged Friday with attempted first-degree murder and four other felonies stemming from allegations he planned to kill his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

Prosecutors charged McCracken, who remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail, with one count of attempted first-degree-murder, one count of felony menacing and three counts of felony stalking in a court appearance at the jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 29.

The five-year veteran of the Boulder Police Department was arrested just April 29 after police say he told his roommate -- a fellow Boulder police officer -- that he intended to kill his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend in front of her, and then kill himself. Both the ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend are Boulder police dispatchers.

McCracken, who had been on leave from the department since being injured in the line of duty last summer, is being held on $500,000 bond in that case.

In an unrelated case, McCracken was arrested on drug charges at the jail Thursday after Longmont police say they were informed that a package of Skittles candies containing prescription painkillers had been mailed to his house.

McCracken is scheduled to be charged Tuesday with possession of a Schedule III controlled substance and conspiracy to obtain a Schedule III controlled substance, both misdemeanors, in connection with that arrest, Boulder County Assistant District Attorney Ryan Brackley said.

He is being held on $10,000 bond in that case.
