Advocates for Michael Ververis claim police brutality
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
(WWLP) - Two local non-profit groups joined together in Springfield in Friday
morning to protest police brutality.
The
"Community Coalition for Justice" and the "Justice for Charles
Campaign" stood together outside Springfield Distrcit Court ahead of Michael Ververis ' court hearing.
The protestors say
that Ververis was assaulted back in January 2011, by six Springfield police
officers. Ververis, however, was charged with both a misdemeanor and felony
charges, which they say is unfair.
“What we're trying
to do is bring attention to the city so that the people realize just how much
the police have control without being kept accountable,” said Ellen Graves of Arise for Social Justice .
“Our family has
been going through a nightmare,” said Michael’s mother, Maria Ververis, “and
it's very comforting to us to have the community supporting us.
Ververis' attorney
is trying to get the judge to motion a release of the records of the six police
officers involved, which allegedly include citizen complaints.
