Cop is an arsonist

Officer arrested for arson, community in shock

WARRIOR, Ala. (WIAT) - Samuel Furman and his son timmy cut grass twice a month at 490 Dana Road in Warrior, Al. They help maintain the property until the owner can sell it.

Timmy Furman says he and his father had done a little work to the trailer on the property recently.

"We had plywood from where you got your other camera all the way around it and a couple weeks later is when it got burnt," he says.

Samuel Furman had plans to eventually purchase the 4 bedroom trailer and make it a home, but now that only ashes and a little foundation remain, that definitely won't happen anytime soon.

What happened has the entire community in disbelief.

Dorothy Ragland has lived in Warrior for 22 years.

"I am shocked to death. I never in my goodness would have dreamed nothing like this," says Ragland.

Curtis Thronton, a Birmingham Police officer of 3 years is charged with several counts of arson for setting a total of 9 fires in the Warrior community.

" I just, i don't know what to think. i just really don't know," says Dorothy.

Samuel says an officer is suppose to uphold the law, not break it.

"That's a bad example for a police officer cause i uphold the law and i love to uphold the law."

Rebecca Shaver also lives in Warrior and says something like this is a bad example for children who look up to law enforcement.

"You gotta think about what kids are thinking when they see that a cop did it. I mean you know their suppose to follow what cops and other people do, that you know strive to do good in the world."

As the shock continues for those who pass by the homes that were torched Samuel and his son continue to maintain the house on Dana Road whether it's still standing or not.
