Stanly officer charged

NEW LONDON -- Officer in Stanly County has been charged with embezzling money from the organization, the sheriff’s office says.

Investigators say Kristi Williams Humphrey, 42, was charged with embezzlement and forgery. She turned herself in to deputies Thursday and was jailed under $10,000 bond.

Deputies accuse Humphrey of taking the money from the North Stanly Middle School PTA in late May. According to the sheriff’s office, Humphrey was treasurer of the PTA when school officials noticed misapplied funds that belonged to the organization.

Humphrey is accused of failing to properly deposit cash into the PTA bank account and of writing several unauthorized checks on the PTA account. According to investigators, she forged an endorsement on the checks.

In both cases, investigators say, Humphrey took the money for personal use.

She has a court date scheduled for June 25.
