A drunken off-duty cop who neglected to brake fast at
Tiffany's was sentenced today to six months in jail.
Raphel Ospina, 28, will do the time for ramming his Chrysler
300 sedan into a tree outside Tiffany's flagship Fifth Avenue store, and then
careening into the pricy bauble joint itself, back in February, 2010.
Ospina suffered a broken hip and five broken ribs; his two
passengers also suffered lasting, debilitating injuries, and the sidewalk
outside the granite storefront was left littered with blood and glass. His
blood alcohol level was .13, well above the legal limit of .08.
"My life is over…my career is over," he told cops
at the hospital.
In March, Ospina went to trial in a failed attempt to keep
his badge, claiming that it was one of his two passengers who had been at the
wheel. Both passengers were hauled to the witness stand by prosecutors, and
admitted that they hadn't been in the driver's seat.
Upon his release, Ospina must enroll in a drunk driving program,
install a breath-test device in his vehicle, and do five years probation.
