hearing set for former Jackson police officer charged with bribery
JACKSON, Miss. — A detention hearing has been set for July 5 for a
Jackson police officer who wants out of jail to await trial on charges that he
and two other officers took bribes. The officers — Monyette Quintel Jefferson,
Terence Dale Jenkins and Anthony Ricardo Payne — were arraigned in March. Their
trial is set for Aug. 7. Jefferson has been trying to get released on bond, but
the government has opposed that because prosecutors say he's dangerous. All
three have pleaded not guilty. In a six-count indictment, Jefferson is accused
of accepting more than $20,000 in bribes and Jenkins and Payne are accused of
accepting $10,000 each.
