Santa Fe police enact new misconduct policy

SANTA FE, N.M. — Santa Fe police say they will dismiss any officers who commit deception or serious misconduct as part of a new zero-tolerance policy.

The Santa Fe New Mexican (http://bit.ly/PIOpz8) reports the new policy going into effect Friday states firing can be the appropriate discipline, even for first-time offenses.

Police Chief Ray Rael says there was no consistent department standard before and punishment varied from written reprimands to suspensions.

Rael says the new policy includes a mandate that "untruthful" conduct can be met with termination.

The chief says the new rules should bolster public trust.

Domestic violence, sexual crimes, driving under the influence or any felonies are among the offenses that will warrant dismissal.

Rael says every officer will receive due process before disciplinary action is determined.
