Civil rights trial against Erie police begins

A civil rights lawsuit alleging Erie police wrongly arrested a woman and searched her home nearly five years ago is headed to trial today in U.S. District Court.

Maria Arenas Jordan and her lawyer, Paul Susko, charge that police, amid a search for two burglary suspects, subjected Jordan to false arrest and her 10-year-old stepson to excessive force. They also claim police illegally searched Jordan's family's East Fifth Street home and belongings without a warrant. They are seeking damages.

The incident happened Sept. 26, 2007, as police were searching for a van that had fled a burglary and shooting.
