Brockton cop busted in shakedown sting

By O’Ryan Johnson

A veteran Brockton cop was arrested on charges of shaking down an undercover police officer, in a bust that was monitored by police caught on camera, authorities said.

Michael Sullivan, who has worked on the department for 24 years was charged with two counts of larceny from a person. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday and was released on his own recognizance.

The Brockton police internal affairs division said in a report that it will file full reports soon and more charges are possible.

Police said in March Sullivan was captured on a Brockton police security camera taking money from a victim, whose identity police are not releasing.

Cops said that on Wednesday “while on duty and adorned in uniform” took money from an undercover police officer. That exchange was also captured on camera, police said.

“At this time several similar incidents have been noted to have taken place between the March incident and the date of this report, which are under review with the intention of charges to follow,” police said in a report.

Defense attorney Michael Darche said Sullivan, a 1977 graduate of Brockton High School with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, has a stellar reputation for honesty, and looks forward to being able to present his side of the story to the court. .

“This is a very serious allegation,” Darche said. “He’s very appreciative of the support from his friends and family and by his fellow police officers many of whom have reached out to him to say he enjoys their complete support.”

Darche said Sullivan is due back in court June 15.
