Boulder cop Christian McCracken makes first appearance on attempted-murder charge

Prosecutors slated to formally file charges on Friday

The Boulder police officer arrested last week on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder made his first appearance in a Boulder courtroom today, less than a week after being charged with two counts of felony stalking in Broomfield in connection with the same case.

Christian McCracken, 32, of Frederick, appeared in court this afternoon at the Boulder County Jail for an advisement hearing in the case against him. He was arrested by Broomfield police April 28 on allegations the 5-year veteran of the Boulder Police Department stalked and harassed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, both Boulder police dispatchers.

On Thursday, Boulder police arrested McCracken on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after investigators said they came to believe he "may have planned and taken a significant step toward committing a homicide against the new boyfriend."

Boulder prosecutors are scheduled to formally file charges against McCracken at 2 p.m. Friday at the jail. His bond in the Boulder case remains $500,000. He also is being held at the Broomfield County Jail on $100,000 bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court in Broomfield for a preliminary hearing on May 24.

McCracken will remain in custody in Boulder until his hearing Friday, according to officials at the Boulder County Jail. The Boulder police officer is being kept separate from the rest of the inmates.

McCracken has been on leave from the police department since he sustained a head injury while trying to arrest a University of Colorado student outside The Sink on University Hill last Agust
