Savannah-Chatham Officer Involved in 2010 Shooting set to be Fired

Savannah-Chatham Officer Involved in 2010 Shooting set to be Fired

(Savannah, GA) Savannah-Chatham Metro Police confirm that Officer Jason Carey who was involved in a highly publicized shooting case in 2010, has been "suspended in anticipation of termination."

Spokesman Julian Miller tells News 3 that the decision was made Monday afternoon by the police board which consists of eight members, four police captains and four police majors.

Miller would only say it was a "personnel issue" and that the matter had been decided by the board.

In March of 2010, Carey shot and killed a Savannah resident, Larry Wall, after an altercation at Wall's home. The officer maintained it was in self defense. Police indicated that Carey had killed Wall after after Wall stabbed him.

But Wall's family never accepted that explanation, saying that Wall himself had called police to report vandalism at his home. In 2010, a grand jury refused to indict Carey on any charges stemming from the incident.

Since them, Wall's father has filed a lawsuit against Carey and the City of Savannah, citing negligent hiring and supervision and deliberate indifference to Wall's safety.

Wall's aunt Edna Beaufort told us that the family is hoping that the action taken against Carey is because of what happened to her nephew. "We can tell you this, we think the streets of Savannah are safer now and we're glad another family won't go through what we've been through."
