NY officer convicted in shooting of her girlfriend

NEW YORK — A New York police officer has been convicted of assault for shooting her then-girlfriend during an argument. But the officer was acquitted of attempted murder in a shooting she called self-defense.

Ekeythia Dunston will be fired and could face up to 25 years in prison after Monday's verdict. Defense lawyer Edgar De Leon says Dunston is gratified by her acquittal on the attempted murder count.

She and former girlfriend Erica Legall quarreled about text messages in August 2010. Manhattan prosecutors say Legall hit Dunston in the head with a laundry iron, and Dunston fired two shots with her service revolver. Legall was hit in the shoulder and leg.

Legall also was charged with assault, but De Leon says a grand jury declined to indict her. Court records weren't immediately available.
