Brothers file excessive force suit against Riverdale police

Two brothers are suing Riverdale and two of the village’s police officers. The brothers claim they were beaten and falsely arrested in a 2010 confrontation.

Perry J. Hines and Jawuan C. Hines, a minor, filed the suit Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

They claim Perry Hines was behind the wheel in a driveway in the 14600 block of South Princeton Avenue in Dolton on Aug. 31, 2010, when two Riverdale police officers ordered them out.

The older brother said he was immediately handcuffed, thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked, the suit claims. Officers allegedly handcuffed, punched and kicked the younger brother in the confrontation as well.

Even though the brothers were injured, police took them back to the station instead of providing medical attention right away, the suit claims. Perry Hines was charged with felony fleeing and eluding a police officer, but was later found not guilty.

The six-count suit claims false arrest, excessive force, failure to provide medical attention and malicious prosecution and holds the village of Riverdale responsible for its employees’ actions.

The suit seeks an unspecified amount in compensatory and punitive damages, plus attorney’s fees, and demands a jury trial.

A spokesperson for the Riverdale Police Department did not immediately return a message seeking comment Wednesday night.
