Lansing police officer charged in robbery was dismissed from department for misconduct, drunken driving
LANSING, MI -- A former Lansing police officer charged in a weekend gas station robbery was terminated from the department in 2002 for misconduct.
Wilbert Brewer, 37, served as an officer of the Lansing Police Department from 1998 to 2002, when he was dismissed following a drunken driving offense and other misconduct, according to Lansing Police Chief Teresa Szymanski.
Michigan State Police's criminal record of Brewer shows no drunken driving arrest, charge or sentence. The only offenses listed are charges against him stemming from the weekend robbery.
Brewer faces charges of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
The Ingham County Sheriff's Office Delhi Division said Brewer and an accomplice, 59-year-old Alvin Franklin Jr., entered Speedway at Bishop Road and M-99 in Delhi Township about 2:15 a.m. Saturday. They indicated to the store's clerk they had a weapon and threatened his life.
Franklin and Brewer demanded the clerk hand over cash from the register. The clerk obliged, according to police, and the suspects also took several lottery tickets.
The suspects struck the clerk in the back of the head, inflicting minor injuries. They fled the scene in a U-Haul truck, according to police.
Authorities located the truck Saturday afternoon, and subsequently arrested the pair.
Brewer's bond was set at $25,000 cash surety. He was lodged at the Ingham County Jail in Mason.
Brewer requested a court-appointed attorney, court records show. He is set to appear before Ingham District Judge Thomas Boyd at 9 a.m. May 3 for preliminary examination.
