Danielle Petrangelo, Agawam police officer who accidentally shot Britteney Miles, no longer on force

AGAWAM – Danielle Petrangelo, the Agawam police officer who the district attorney said accidentally shot a pregnant mother of two in the face while responding to a call, is no longer employed by the Agawam Police Department, according to the mayor.

“This is a personnel matter. Therefore, I am not able to comment on specifics except that officer Petrangelo is no longer employed by the town of Agawam,” Mayor Richard A. Cohen stated in prepared statement issued Friday in response to questions about the situation.

Neither Cohen, Police Chief Robert Campbell nor City Solicitor Vincent F. Gioscia would answer questions about the Internal Affairs investigation into Petrangelo’s May 5 shooting of Britteney Miles.

“We live in a litigious society. I’m hesitant to discuss a personnel matter,” Gioscia said.

Miles, 21, was shot while opening the door of her apartment at Elizabeth Manor to police. Miles suffered a shattered jaw and had to have surgery.

The Internal Affairs investigation by Police Lt. Richard Light was to be an administrative review of the matter. Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni, announced in September that a probe by his office found that the shooting was accidental and there was no evidence of criminal conduct by Petrangelo.

Petrangelo, who could not be reached for comment, was put on paid administrative leave following the shooting. The shooting occurred after Petrangelo and another officer responded to a police call about 4:30 a.m.

The district attorney issued a seven-page report in which he stated the Police Department might evaluate the matter to determine if “administrative action, directives and/or findings are appropriate based upon application of the department’s rules and procedural standards.”

Miles, though her attorney Frank Flannery, has disputed the police of account of that night that maintains that police heard yelling and the breaking of glass just before Petrangelo’s weapon accidentally discharged. The victim has contended she did not scream, bang or throw anything prior to officers arriving at her door.

Miles has stated that at the time of the shooting she, her 3-year-old son Miles and her 1-year-old daughter were the only people in apartment.
The victim has also stated that when she called police to her home she did not realize that the person who had entered her home through her bedroom window was her boyfriend David Kozak. After Miles realized it was Kozak, she got him to leave her apartment at her request.
