cop charged with OWI gets home detention in plea deal
A former Indianapolis police officer accused of operating
while intoxicated was sentenced to home detention after agreeing to a plea
deal. Michael Rinehart, a 35-year veteran with the Indianapolis Metropolitan
Police Department, was arrested last June after, police said, his driver’s side
mirror clipped a road construction worker in the back as he passed by West 16th
Street and North Worth Avenue in Speedway.
A construction crew supervisor caught up with Rinehart and
alerted him about the incident, according to IMPD. Rinehart then returned to
the scene, identified himself as a police officer, and left. Rinehart, 59, was
charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to stop after an
accident resulting in injury. He pleaded guilty to the OWI charge, a Class A
misdemeanor, during a court hearing this morning, and prosecutors dropped the
second charge.
He was also sentenced to 241 days of probation, 40 hours of
community service and 30 days of driver’s license suspension.The worker, Billy
Thomson, sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.

sergeant busted on drunk-driving rap after Brooklyn accident
An off-duty NYPD sergeant was busted on driving drunk
charges after he hit a parked vehicle in Brooklyn early Monday, police said.
Donald Stewart, 33, crashed his 2011 Grand Cherokee into a double-parked Nissan
Quest, which then hit a parked Volvo sedan on Putnam Ave. near Stuyvesant Ave.
in Bedford-Stuyvesant about 9:20 p.m., according to court papers. Stewart
didn’t stop after hitting the minivan, but was busted two blocks away in the
rear seat of his SUV after the front tire came off, according to court
documents. He had his vehicle’s keys in his pocket.
He reeked of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and
walked unsteadily. He refused a Breathalyzer test, according to court
papers.Stewart was awaiting arraignment on charges of DWI and leaving the scene
of an accident in Brooklyn Criminal Court Monday.
